Whether you are an importer, a wholesaler or a brand owner, the factory you pick will decide the quality of your product, the reliability of your delivery and, in the end, the health of your margin. The good news is that a well-run apparel factory in China can be a genuine long-term partner. The challenge is telling one apart from another before you commit.
This checklist reflects the questions we hear from buyers every week, and the same standards we apply inside our own factory near Hangzhou. Use it as a starting point, not a final exam.
1. Check Real Production Capacity, Not Numbers on a Website
Every factory claims to be big. Few can show you what their lines actually produce. When you speak with a factory, ask for the product categories they run most often and the volume they ship in a typical month. At Zuohan Clothing, for example, our production team of roughly 600 people produces more than 500,000 garments a year, including premium suits and shirts for corporate and institutional clients. That tells a buyer what we can handle, and it gives us a baseline to be honest about.

Match the factory's strengths to your product. A factory that mainly sews men's suits can still make women's shirts, but your first orders will go smoother if you start with what the line already does well.
2. Test the Sampling Process Early
Sampling is the fastest way to judge a factory. Send a reference photo and a short specification, and watch what comes back. How quickly do they respond? Do they ask clarifying questions, or do they just say yes to everything? A factory that asks about fabric, sizing and trims is reading your request seriously. At Zuohan, first samples are normally developed in about 3 to 7 days once the design is confirmed, which is a realistic pace for a made-to-order garment.

3. Ask About Quality Control Before the Order, Not After
Quality control should be part of the production plan, not an afterthought. Ask whether the factory runs in-process inspections, end-of-line checks and final pre-shipment checks, and who is responsible at each stage. Our own QC team works through cutting, sewing, finishing and packing, and we share progress updates with buyers during bulk production.
4. Look for Management System Certifications
Third-party certifications are not proof of perfection, but they show that a factory maintains documented processes. Commonly cited standards in the apparel industry include ISO 9001 for quality management and ISO 14001 for environmental management. Zuohan Clothing holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and GB/T 28001 certifications and is rated an AAA credit enterprise. Ask any factory to show its certificates and check that the certificate scope matches what you are buying.
5. Test Communication Speed
Time zone differences will always exist between China and the US, but a factory with a dedicated sales and project team should still reply within one business day. Notice whether your contact understands your product and asks good questions. Communication is also about documents: packing lists, size and color breakdowns, and compliance documents should come to you clean and complete.
6. Confirm the Export and Logistics Setup
Your order is not done until it clears customs and reaches your door. Confirm which delivery terms the factory supports. Zuohan offers FOB, CIF and DDP, and ships by air, sea and express, with complete export documentation arranged for each order. DDP is especially useful for first-time importers because the price includes freight, insurance and import duties, so the final cost is predictable.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I verify a factory is legitimate?
Ask for business licenses and certifications, request video calls inside the workshop, and check the factory against third-party directories or audit reports. A factory that is confident in its own facility will usually agree to a live tour.
Should I visit the factory before placing an order?
A visit is ideal, but a video tour and a sample order are strong alternatives for first contact. Many US buyers start with a small test order, then visit before scaling up.
What is a realistic first order size?
It depends on the factory and product. Start with whatever quantity the factory can run well on its existing line, and confirm everything in writing before production begins.
How long does sampling take?
With a clear design and specification, first samples are typically developed in about 3 to 7 days. Revisions add time, so the more complete your brief, the faster the sample.
Can a factory help with design, not just production?
Many can. Factories that offer ODM services, like Zuohan, develop styles from your reference images, fabrics, colors and branding. If you only need production from your own patterns, that is usually a simpler OEM arrangement.
